Mace

In this episode, my friend Ken Coble and I sit down to discuss our experience with MACE, a semi-local gaming convention in Charlotte, NC. This was my 11th straight year going to MACE, Ken’s 3rd, and the convention’s 2nd year in Charlotte. While we do spend a little time talking some about the con itself and some of the people we met, the bulk of our comments here are about the games we played throughout the weekend, so hopefully this show will be useful even to those of you who will never have the chance to come to MACE…

This episode is all about my interview with popular board game reviewer Josh Edwards of the Board Game Reviews by Josh blog. Before I get to the actual interview, I do touch on how Extra Life and MACE went, but the vast majority of the show is just me and Josh talking about all sorts of boardgamey things. We touch on the history of his site, what his philosophy is about game reviews, some challenges that he’s faced in writing a few difficult reviews, and lots more. I have to apologize to him that I’ve unintentionally sat on this since late October, but I think it’s worth the wait!

This past weekend was (arguably) my biggest gaming weekend of the year, MACE. I’ve been going for 9 years now, and had some really high hopes that this might possibly be the best year ever considering how many friends (new and old) were going to be there. In the end, my expectations were probably a little unreasonably high, but despite some disappointment here and there, I still had a really great time…

As I said in the first part of my review, I pretty much lived in the baordgame room this year at MACE. So here’s a relatively brief rundown of what I played and how they went…

This past weekend was the date of my usual gaming high point of the year, MACE…

As always, it’s hard for me to keep current with my reports and such, but at least this time I can blame a scourge of intestinal distress that has plagued my household over the last few days.  Anyway, let’s talk about mini-mace, which took place at the Hanes Mall Golden Corral on January 31, and all the gaming goodness that ensued therein…

Well, I’m getting back to real life today after yet another fantastic year at the Mid-Atlantic Convention Expo, also known as MACE.  My focus was even more on boardgaming this year, playing 7 plays of 6 different boardgames and only one RPG session…

MACE is next weekend, and I’ve been looking a lot at the schedule of games.  I’m definitely trying to focus more on boardgames this year, but I still want to hit a few RPG’s throughout the weekend.  Below is my tentative plan for each time block, where some are more certain than others…

I was very excited when I noticed on the mini-mace II website that Ron McClung (the MACE gaming coordinator) had a copy of Battlestar Galactica! I made it my mission to play it during the event, and my mission has been accomplished!  So, did it live up to my expectations?
