Awards

I’m still trying to get things back up to speed here at the GamerChris blog and Exploring Games podcast, but in the meantime, a few big awards have been announced […]

As I’ve done for the past 6 years, it’s now time for me to look back over the year just gone by and evaluate both how much I’ve been playing and which games have risen to the top…

In finally getting back to the mic after the holidays, this episode is all about wrapping up 2013. I start off with a little bookkeeping (and announce the winner of the Bruges contest) and discuss (okay, brag) about all the games I got for Christmas. Then I spend quite a bit of time catching up on all of the games I’ve managed to play over the last 3 weeks or so. And finally, I round out the show by looking back over 2013 and giving my “awards” for the year, including the official Exploring Games Game of the Year!

So apparently, this was the week for big time boardgame awards. Between the truly important (financially, anyway) Spiel des Jahres announcement on Monday and the official Dice Tower Awards announcement on Tuesday (which is probably a bigger deal for us hobby gamers), there are all sorts of selections to pick over and complain about. Let’s get to it!

Just over 6 years ago, my gaming life changed forever when I managed to pull together a few other local gamers to play at our FLGS, Hypermind. We’ve had our ups and downs over the years, but the core group is still going strong having fun together each and every week. So once a year, we take a little time out to celebrate with cake and snacks, and to reflect on the last year in the form of voting for some of our favorite games…

Most of you may already know, but the winners of the Spiel des Jahres (German “Game of the Year”) awards were announced on Monday. Just to make sure you know, here are the games…

The Dice Tower Award nominees were recently announced, and since they only allow the best and brightest boardgame minds in the hobby to participate*, I felt compelled to list them here…

Just over 5 years ago, I reached out to a few local gamers on BGG and some of the regulars already hanging out at my FLGS to start a weekly boardgame group. On January 16, 2007, we met that first time to play Settlers of Catan and begin our exploration of what has now amounted to over 483 different games…

Time really flies. I can remember back in 3rd grade or so trying to calculate how old I’d be in the year 2000 and thinking that I’d be sooo old (25/26, by the way). But now it’s freaking 12 years after Y2K and I still don’t feel all that old yet. But maybe part of the reason I still feel pretty young at heart is my passion for games and realizing the importance both of having fun and challenging my mind with them.

So, as I’ve done for the last 4 years, come with me as I look back at the previous year, review what and how much I’ve played, and then give some attention to some of the games that have really stood out for me.

Well, I’d love to be able to tell you how I’ve been off galavanting at GenCon or WBC or at least on some excellent family vacation somewhere. Maybe I’d come back with news of surprise games and interviews with luminaries of the gaming world. Heck, maybe I’d even tell you about how I shmoozed with game publishers and will have a game published soon, or that I was going to start my own game company and publish games that my wife birthed wholly formed from her head like Athena leaping from Zeus’ mighty noggin…
