In catching up on my blog/post reading today, I came across two negative reviews of Dominion that stuck out to me. It was a bit interesting that they were posted back-to-back on BGG, and that they actually touched on slightly different issues with this top 10 ranked game…

Inspired by a comment that Chris Ingersoll made, I ran some statistics about how starting position affects ending placement in Small World. Kind of like we thought, there does appear to be a correlation…

In Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery, players take on the roles of the great colonial powers beginning at the end of the 15th century. It is a worker-placement game where players choose 5 or more actions each turn from things such as discovering new colonies, sending colonists over to the new world, developing trade networks, and waging war…

It was hard to get out of bed this morning… Despite having a class to teach early this morning, I and some of my loyal boardgaming compatriots played until nearly midnight last night. And the cool thing is that the burning eyes, frequent yawns, and nagging fatigue are all worth it to get the chance to play some of these most excellent games!

Something terrible happened, and this post was inadvertantly and irrevocably deleted. Since I cross-posted the Acquire report at BGG, I’ve managed to recover at least part of it, but the rest is lost forever…

So, back in October, I resolved to finally play Acquire, which should have been on my Shameful List of Unplayed Games except for the fact that, for some reason completely unknown to me, I was barely aware of its existence and significance when I wrote the list two years ago… Last night, the stars aligned, and I finally got my chance to play Acquire.

Last week was another great game night! I got to play the Game of the Month! as well as two of my all-time favorites, and had a fantastic time in all three!

I’ve been listening to Mark Johnson’s Boardgames To Go again, and it’s got me thinking. His most recent show was a discussion with Greg Pettit about whether or not any of “our” modern boardgames have a shot at becoming real classics along the lines of Chess, Go, Monopoly, or Scrabble. So, of course, I’ve got to chime in with my thoughts about the whole whing-ding…

I thought that it would be good for me to start a semi-regular piece where I talk a little about some upcoming games that sound cool enough to make my wishlist… So, what’s On My Radar???

The most exciting thing about this week’s session of the Hypermind BoardGamers was the arrival of Small World, which we immediately voted to be our Game of the Month! for May. But I’ll get back to that in a minute, because the first activity of the evening (for me, at least) was to put to bed our current GotM!, Age of Empires III.
